Many essential items have at critical moments been produced by friends.
They made my mad endeavor a great adventure and they took my interminable
lists with admirable patience.
Therefore I dedicate this work not only to the designers and craftsmen who
produced the equipment and the nation that undertook such a mighty programme
but also to those who had the vision and imagination to see beyond the dirty
scrapmetal phase.
